Interstellar

2021 · Concert Design · Proposed

Jay Chou's music, imagined as a starry sky and a canyon.

Interstellar — image 1

A speculative concert inspired by the music of Jay Chou, conceived for Wembley Stadium, London (proposed) as an independent project. I designed the stage and costumes, exploring what digital technology can do on stage. Exhibited at Charing Cross, London, in June 2021.

Inspiration

Jay Chou's songs blend many elements, with great force and a dreamlike quality. He weaves pop together in complex, subtle ways and pairs instruments boldly, so his music never sits in a single genre. It reminds me of a boundless starry sky whose contents you can never fully map, and of the shapes and colours of a great canyon: mysterious, ever-changing, always full of surprise.

Technology

The design combines extended reality (XR), virtual image reconstruction, projection, virtual reality, cloud recording with live interaction, and sensor-driven interactive screens with real-time infrared tracking. The costumes use EL wire and LED fibre-optic luminous fabric.
