Macbeth

2019 · Costume Design

He believes he is free, yet he is a puppet on the strings of fate.

Macbeth — image 1

A speculative costume design for Shakespeare's Macbeth. Countless threads hang half-seen in the sky, weaving into a pair of fate's hands that pull at the strings tied to Macbeth's shoulders. The work explores power, desire and ambition, and our helplessness before a fate already written.

Concept

The man standing on the earth believes he commands his own fate. He does not see the countless threads tangling in the sky above, half-visible, weaving into a pair of hands that keep tugging at the strings on his shoulders. He thinks he is free, but he is only fate's puppet, driven by desire step by step towards an ending already set. Fate does not act on us directly. It works through our own desires, sins and character.
